Why "Project Effectiness Workshops"?
The SD Murphy ‘Project Effectiveness
Workshop’ has been developed by experienced consultants familiar
with the shortfalls of traditional teambuilding on projects. Most
project leaders have all experienced so called
‘teambuilding’ where practical project issues were
overlooked and action items not been followed up. In the SD Murphy
process, we make it possible for teams to discuss upcoming challenges
in the development of the project, such as moving from Front End
engineering into detailed design, from detailed design into
construction, and relocation of key project groups during the phased
development of a project.
Through a series of workshops, designed and held on a planned basis
over the life of the project, we ensure continuity and a built-in
process to achieve timely follow through.
What SD Murphy Offers
As no two projects are alike, we spend
time with our clients early in the project to custom design workshops
which identify and resolve many of the complex issues inherent in major
projects. Based on these initial discussions we develop, along with our
client, a series of workshops to address their unique challenges.
Some of these challenges include:
Alignment of owners’ senior managers (project sponsors or management committee members)
- Alignment of contractor’s JV team
- Alignment of Project Management Teams taking into consideration
aspects such as cultural differences, contractor-owner relationships,
multi locations, and behaviours driven by the contract form.
- Building a project culture and establishing principles of behaviour.
- Changes in focus as the project moves through the EPC cycle.
- Interaction of the different work groups responsible for the various segments of the project.
- Assessing the ‘readiness’ to move on to the next
phase, providing for synergy between the workshops and the
client’s ‘gate’ processes.
How We Help Our Clients Achieve Results
For each workshop our process involves
interviewing a cross section of the participants to identify issues
needing discussion, especially those that may not be raised through
normal channels. From these interviews, we establish the broad agenda
that is then agreed with the workshop sponsor. The primary objective of
each workshop is to create productive dialogues that make constructive
conversation and resolution of critical issues possible.
Typical issues resolved at the ‘Project Effectiveness Workshops’ include:
- owner governance processes
- owner management strategy
- consensus on project priorities and team accountability for meeting milestones
- competitive forces in the contract and how those can create nonproductive behavior
- conflicts between corporate cultures on the job and how they can be resolved
- agreement on project norms of behavior
- building a committed and effective team from several organizations
We can also capture the raw information from the workshop and provide this
as an appendix in a workshop report to be distributed to all
participants.
SD Murphy maintains an on-going dialogue with the workshop sponsors
to ensure that the workshop plan established early in the project is
reviewed and where necessary is modified to meet the needs of the
project.
A Project Leadership Forum
As an integral component of the workshops
discussed above, SD Murphy recommends an ongoing and flexible
1/2-day (or full-day) Project Leadership Forum This can be held
monthly, or less frequently, depending on project leadership needs.
These ‘Project Leadership Forums’ are a gathering of all
senior individuals on the project. They are used to review changes in
the development of the project that may necessitate some re-thinking of
its execution. These Forums provide a structure which project leaders
readily use to assess the strengths and weaknesses of the project. They
also enable corrections to be made while time is still available to
avoid problems and to fully exploit opportunities. SD Murphy
supports Project Leadership Forums with meeting design and facilitation.
